Shortly after I wrote that blog my business mentor contacted me saying that another of her customers, JJ Vigin, was about to launch her new book and she wanted to know if I wanted a free copy of it. She wanted to get it into the hands of business women who were influential.
I said yes, of course. I pre-ordered the book and it turned up on Christmas Eve. I felt the compulsion to read it right away and it blew me away.
In this book JJ explains how the majority of us eat inflammatory foods, how the body processes these foods that are inflammatory, how the immune system gets involved causing us to crave more of them, and what they do to our bodies.
As it was Christmas, and I was eating many of these inflammatory foods and would be over the next few days, I was given a window of awareness into my body. Every day I knew when I was eating these foods and now that I knew what they were doing to my body I could feel it, witnessing it first hand. I had bloating, I had intestinal discomfort, I had wind, I felt uncomfortable.
So as soon as January 1st came around I decided that I was going to eliminate all of these inflammatory foods, as JJ explains.
I eliminated: Gluten (in fact all grains except for brown rice), Dairy, Eggs, Sugar (only having natural sugars from fruit and honey), Soy (except for fermented soy in Miso), Peanuts and Corn.
I had already eliminated bad fats, meaning anything that isn't Olive Oil (cold only), Coconut Oil (cold or heated), Sesame Oil (cold or heated), Avocado & Animal fats.
I started to feel better instantly. My bloating disappeared. My intestinal discomfort disappeared. My wind was greatly reduced. I felt clearer in my mind. My weight started dropping quickly.
I was actually eating more than I used to with this way of eating. The calorie model just didn't work for me, no matter how few calories I had and however much exercise I did, the weight still slowly crept up instead of down. It didn't make sense while I was believing this calorie model. But as JJ says in her book, our bodies are not an engine, they are a chemistry lab. What we eat is far more important than how much we eat and much of what we have been taught about healthy food is just plain wrong.
Just 1 week into eating this way and realising that we have all been duped into believing marketing of foods as real science, I came across a message from a heart surgeon. He felt that he had to come clean, that what we have all been told about fat and cholestorol causing heart attacks and stroke is just plain incorrect.
He explains that INFLAMMATORY foods are the cause of heart attacks and stroke, along with many other of the big diseases that we have around now. The reaction that our immune system has to them causes damage to the inside of our arteries - like they have been scoured and scrubbed, they are inflamed and red raw. Then the fat or cholestorol can get caught on these ragged arteries causing the heart attacks and strokes. It's not the fat that causes it, in fact good fats are very good for us, as long as we take care of our arteries by not eating inflammatory foods.
Next I heard that someone had cured their Altzheimers disease by eating an imflammatory-free diet and adding plenty of coconut oil to their diet.
All of this information was coming to me at once and I was shocked at how we have all been misled by 'science' performed by people paid by those producing the products with these foods in them.
I now know how to easily lose the extra weight I had, without having to workout for long periods of time (that's another fallacy, working out for longer than 15 minutes is ageing and not good for us, short periods of very intense exercise is best and generally moving more the rest of the time, eg. moderate walking, swimming etc.) and without having to starve myself and feel hungry.
I easily dropped 4kg in 4 weeks, for the last week I have kept the at exactly the same weight every day. Now I know how I lose weight and how I maintain my weight easily. From now on I am going to lose 1kg of weight each week and remain steady at the weekends until the extra 5kg has gone.
I had some dairy by mistake one day, some whey protein was in a product that I ate. As soon as it was in my mouth my tongue tingled, the tingling spread to my lips and then whole face, then down my legs. My face started to swell and my throat started to swell. Luckily the allergic reaction stopped there and reversed. I felt nauseous, I felt paranoid, I felt down, I felt like there was something wrong, those feelings lasted 24 hours and were a direct result of the dairy. It reminded me of when I had eaten some cheese on a sandwich years ago and had had the same allergic reaction. Milk and yoghurt had always made me feel low and phlegmy, so I have avoided them for years. But I still had cheese occasionally. I usually ate cheese on crackers with wine. I had often wondered why sometimes I felt fine the next morning after sharing a bottle of wine, and sometimes I felt terrible - after the same amount and the same type of wine. There was my answer - it was the cheese I was feeling, the nausea and feeling horrible after the evenings I had eaten cheese with the wine.
I also learned that I am highly sensitive to raw garlic. It causes instant headaches when I have it. I learned that raw garlic has a chemical that is identican to the 'headache' chemical that the brain produces to give you the headache feeling! Again, raw garlic was one of those foods that I used to have when drinking wine, I would rub it on some toasted sourdough with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil as a snack. Then I would wonder why the wine had given me a headache the next day!
I am so happy and grateful that the universe showed me how to understand my body, it has changed my life!
